Driving through part of the South Island, near to Hanmer Springs, we
travelled through a number of townships with the names of Yorkshire
villages and towns.
In the 1920s there was an increase in immigrants from the more industrial areas
of northern England, especially Yorkshire. The local scenery was also
reminiscent of the Yorkshire Dales and parts of Derbyshire so I guess
it reminded them so much of the old country that they gave the old
names to the new settlements. Fuji
